What is the
Delta Classic 4 Literacy?

Originally created by Dr. Fitz Hill as the Literacy Classic while he was Head Coach of the San Jose State Spartans, the event has moved to Little Rock as the Delta Classic 4 Literacy. The 2008 classic event will be the third of an annual series of football games to be played between historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

But the Delta Classic is much more than just a football game. Each year, the game will cap off a full week of Delta Classic events designed to raise awareness about literacy improvement needs in the Delta region of the South and to raise money to fund literacy programs.

Since the first classic in 2006, $40,000 of game proceeds has been donated to Arkansas Literacy Councils (ALC), which has made sub-grants of $5,000 each to seven literacy councils forming in Chicot, Independence, Ouachita/Calhoun, Prairie, Phillips, Randolph, and Woodruff Counties.

With help from ALC, these councils have worked to establish boards of directors which must be in place and working efficiently before being able to receive funding. The contributions from the Delta Classic 4 Literacy have provided much-needed financial help to these boards and volunteer tutors to help pay the costs of office space, telephones, books, and supplies for volunteer tutors and adult students.
